It occurs when the environment becomes enriched with nutrients, increasing the amount of plant and algae growth, which can reduce dissolved oxygen in water<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bodies. This can impact fish stock levels of sensitive species with cascading effects on entire aquatic ecosystems and overall loss of biodiversity. The general deterioration of water quality may also hinder water use by other communities and industries.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption__large\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A new Water Quality proposal<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The ASC\u2019s species-specific standards contain requirements on water quality. However, they:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vary considerably in language and approach \u2013 even when the standards cover similar production systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Focus predominantly on individual farm sites without considering the impacts of other farms that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">located<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the same water<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bodies, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">therefore <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lacking an area-based approach<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Due to the issues mentioned above, ASC is revising the Water Quality requirements as part of the ASC Farm Standard development.\u00a0 The revision is carried out with support from an expert Technical Working Group (TWG).<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new water quality proposal deviates from an approach based only on prescribed requirements linked to an individual farm site, which might have limited or insignificant <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">impacts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">water quality<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and moves to an approach based on risk<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in which the cumulative effect of multiple users is considered.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taking into account<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the cumulative nature of eutrophication, the new water quality proposal categorises receiving waters according to their nutrient retention capacity based on hydraulic residence time, differentiating between still\/slower flowing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and faster flowing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> systems. In this context, the indicators within the proposal have been developed to identify the nutrient retention capacity of the receiving water<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">body and the susceptibility of at-risk water<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bodies to additional nutrient inputs. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Farms <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">located<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the most sensitive waterbody type must form an Area Management Agreement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (AMA)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. If changes in trophic status start occurring, farms will need to assess the contribution of aquaculture to nutrient inputs and implement corrective actions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as part of the AMA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
